First test of S3's Chrome S27

X-bit Labs published the test of S3's new GPU, the Chrome S27. This processor is the most powerful of the new line of GPU announced two months ago. The Chrome S20 are entry level GPUs based on the DeltaChrome and GammaChrome architecture with of course several minor improvements. They feature 8 pixel shader pipelines (but only 4 texturing units), 4 vertex shaders, are clocked at 700 MHz and are based on Fujitsu's 90 nm process.

The Chrome S27 average performances are between the X1300 Pro and X700 but with quite important performance variations from one game to another. This is probably due to, like the bugs encountered in games, the fairly young drivers. S3 still has some work to do.

The Chrome S27 keeps S3's low power consumption promises. It is 20% less power greedy than the X1300 Pro. Now there is still the question of their availability (this is something that hasn't been the strong point of S3's previous GPUs) and price. If S3 wants to gains back some market shares, it will probably have to be under 100€.
