Logo NvidiaRoy Taylor, Vice-President of Content Business Development at Nvidia, recently declared to our colleagues at GamesIndustry.biz that the current product line is "too complicated and confusing for many clients". He added that this is a "challenge which they were currently taking on".

In fact, it’s not always very simple given that the GeForce 8800 GTS can have either a G80 or G92 and depending on which they will be equipped with 320/640 MB or 512 MB as well as the GeForce 9 integrating a G9x but also occasionally a G8x for "M" versions. Moreover, for the latter cards, official standard frequencies specified by Nvidia are too often ignored by its partners and some manufacturers do not hesitate to lower them, sometimes significantly.

We could additionally mention the lack of clarity involving IGPs because some are called “GeForce” and others “nForce” when the differences aren’t always that obvious. Also, there are some incoherencies in nomenclature regarding performances; however, this is rather minimal, at least on the desktop.

However, what is strange is that you just have to open certain .inf files in GeForce Releases which were leaked very recently to learn that (too) many versions of the G94 may see the light of day. In short, Mr. Taylor is entirely correct, but it seems that more effort on internal communication within Nvidia would be appropriate.
