Title: Less MHz for the desktop K8L?
Description: DailyTech has obtained new estimations of frequency ranges of future declinations of the desktop AMD K8L core (Barcelona) and some information about the successor of the current Sempron.

The high end Agena, four cores, will be released during the third quarter 2007. Apparently, it won't be clocked from 2.7 GHz to 2.9 GHz but from 2.4 GHz to 2.6 GHz. Each core has 512KB of L2 cache plus 2MB of shared L3 cache and the processor has a TDP of 125 Watts.

The Kuma, middle range processor equipped with two cores, would have frequencies comprised between 2.0 GHz and 2.9 GHz. Like the higher end version, each core has 512 KB of L2 cache and they share 2 MB of L3 cache. About the TDP, three versions are expected: 89 Watts, 65 Watts and a new Energy Efficient limited to 35Watts. The last one is scheduled to be released a little bit later.

The Rana, successor of the current Sempron, will be restricted in the beginning from 2.1 GHz to 2.3 GHz. However, if AMD's entry level will also have two cores featuring 512 KB of L2 cache, they won't have a shared L3 cache. The TDP will be a reasonable 65 Watts and it will be available during the fourth quarter.

We remind you that they will all be based on 65 nm fabrication process. It is interesting to note that DailyTech indicates that even if these processors are designed to work with the Socket AM2+, they will also be compatible with the Socket AM2 thanks to a bios update (of course, they will use the HyperTransport 1.0 bus and not the 3.0). This is a good news, but AMD France hasn't confirmed this information and the US website only states that Quad Core are compatible with the Socket F and does not speak of the AM2.
