Title: Seagate Cheetah 15K.4
Description: Seagate has just announced the release of the 4th Cheetah hard drive generation. We remind you that Seagate released the first 15000 Rpm SCSI Cheetah hard drives in the beginning of 2000. Compared to the 15K.3, the 15K.4 hard drives have doubled platters (36.7 GB) and come in three flavours: 36.7, 73.4 and 146 GB. Sequential transfer rate is announced between 142 and 85 MB /s, instead of 86 and 52 MB /s previously. We feel that this figure is extraordinarily high. Access time has been reduced by 0.1ms to 3.5 ms for read.

The SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) Ultra 320 SCSI and Fibre Channel hard drives should be released early 2005. The MTBF announced is 1.4 million of hours and is 200 000 hours higher than a 15K.3. Yes it is almost 160 years…but awkwardly the warranty is “only” five years.

Seagate recommended prices for the 36.7, 73.4 and 146 GB versions are respectively $329, $659 and $1315.
