As usual, ASUSTeK is first to draw on the compatibility stakes with, now, a list of motherboards able to support future AM3 processors.

Expected for the beginning of 2009, AMD AM3 processors will support DDR3. In fact AM3 motherboards won’t be able to support AM3 processors, as these CPUs will still support DDR2 RAM and will be supported by AM2+ and even AM2 motherboards.

A BIOS update will still be needed and ASUS has started work on this, only on AM2+ motherboards for the moment, but with time the update should be rolled out generally. The most recent chipsets AMD790FX, 780G, 780V, 770 and NVIDIA GeForce 8300, 8200, 7050 and 7025 are on the agenda but not the absence for the moment of the 790GX d’AMD and the 750a and 780a from NVIDIA which are likely to be on the market soon. It also remains to be seen if the older AM2+ and AM2 motherboards based on the AMD480X, 580X, 690V, 690X and the nForce 560, 570 et 590 will receive the same favourable treatment...
