Sanyo has announced that it will be producing a new blu-ray diode capable of 450mW and 200mW continuous, around two times the current maximum.

This will allow Sanyo to burn disks at 12x, or 54 Mb/s. Even better, it will be able to burn media on 4 layers, giving it a capacity of 100 GB.

Of course that the media will have to measure up, something that is not yet the case in view of the long standardization delays. In any case mass production wont come online for 2 to 3 years. By then, the use of a Blu-ray burner, not enormous even now, may well be even less.
