Although DDR2 prices have been stable for the last 8 months at around $2 for 128 MB, they are falling again this autumn. From $2 at the end of July we are now at $1.43 for a DDR2-800 chip, a 28.5% reduction! Manufacturers are having to adapt fast to a situation that is seeing chips selling at less than production cost.
Elpida and PSC, who have a 16 and 5% share of the market respectively, have announced that they will be reducing production by 10 to 15%. Hynix, with a 20% market share, is stopping production altogether in plants turning out 80nm on 200mm lines. This ought to result in a 5 to 6% reduction in worldwide memory production.
