In the conference call with financial analysts following the publication of AMD’s 2nd quarter results, Dirk Meyer, its new CEO, declared that it’s on track to supply its first 45nm CPUs in the beginning of the fourth quarter of this year. You may recall that pilot production started in June and motherboard manufacturers have already received samples which can be overclocked to 3441 MHz.
While this is quite good news, we should nevertheless keep in mind that Intel introduced the Core 2 QX9650, the first 45nm processor, on November 29th of last year. It should also be said that in actuality the first non-extreme quad core 45nm CPUs only arrived at end of March and in small quantities. In the best case scenario, AMD therefore would "only" be 7 to 8 months behind its rival in terms of fabrication process.
Moreover, the Sunnyvale specified that it normally needs 3 to 4 quarters for its factories to make a complete transition to 45nm. This means roughly mid 2009 as a significant amount of its current investments are devoted to the transition. However, in terms of performances things may not be that simple for the creator of the Athlon because in the fourth quarter we expect the arrival of the first Nehalems whose first benchmarks look very promising...
