While the Radeon HD 4800’s performance/price ratio seems to have gained almost unanimous approval since their release, the GeForce GTX 280 has still enabled Nvidia to keep first place. However, in addition to the Radeon HD 4870 X2, it appears ATI is also working on with the collaboration of several of its partners a solution called the "SuperRV770". It should empower a mono GPU card to threaten models equipped with the GT200.
In actuality, it will consist of a Radeon HD 4870 with a pre-installed watercooling system and an unblocked bios allowing to push the GPU up to 950 MHz and the GDDR5 up to 2400 MHz versus the current 750/1800 MHz. This will represent respective gains of 27% and 33%. Given relatively small difference which currently exists with the GTX 280, it is indeed likely that such cards will take the prize away from Nvidia’s latest creation.
The first card of this type (some uncertainty subsists in terms of its bios), the Diamond Radeon HD 4870 XOC Black Edition, has moreover already been announced with default frequencies of 800/2200 MHz and availability that should theoretically start today at an exclusive partner. ASUSTeK, Sapphire and GeCube amongst others have already expressed interest in this type of product.
