The PCI-SIG (Special Interest Group) which groups together all of the industry players interested in the development of PCI Express have unveiled new details on the 3.0 version of this standard expected out in 2010. These were essentially its energy specifications.

Future triple slot cards supporting the next version developed by the group may consume up to 300W and "only" 225W for those which occupy two slots. There will also be a new 2x4 pin power connector.

Amongst other things, PCI Express 3.0 should enable doubling the bandwidth because it allows a speed of 1 GB /s per x1 lane versus 500 MB/s for the version 2.0 and the 250 MB/s in 1.0.
