AMD and Havok partner up Posted on 12/06/2008 at 10:52 by Marc
AMD and Havok have just announced a partnership which aims to optimize physics on the AMD platform. What would normally be a banal announcement is made interesting by the fact that Havok was acquired by Intel last September.
The press release specifies that the Havok Physics engine already works very well on AMD’s family of CPUs and that Havok and AMD will work together to improve this aspect even more. This will also involve using Radeon GPUs to handle certain aspects of physics simulation.
In October 2005, you may recall that Havok announced the Havok FX, a physics engine developed in close collaboration with NVIDIA and which should have handled certain effects via Shader Model 3.0 compatible GPUs. However, delayed several times, the Havok FX was never released.
After the acquisition of Havok by Intel and then the buyout of AGEIA by NVIDIA, the chess game between Intel and NVIDIA involving physics continues. Let’s just hope that AMD will be more than just a pawn.
