DollarsStanford University will spend $6 million in the next 3 years for a Pervasive Parallelism Lab with the support of Intel, AMD, Nvidia, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Sun. Not only will it focus on the optimization of programming languages in order to better take advantage of multi-core architectures but also on the conception of hardware.

While there is Stanford’s fine reputation and the companies involved have much to gain from large advances in this domain, none are overly enthused to work together. However, $2 million per year for 3 years is a drop in the ocean, relatively speaking. Otherwise, Intel and Microsoft announced in March the contribution of up to $20 million for the development of Universal Parallel Computing Research Centers at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and Berkeley.
