Cray with Intel for intensive calculation Posted on 30/04/2008 at 00:25 by Nicolas
Intel and Cray, a specialist of supercalculators, have announced signing a deal for several years. Amongst other things, they plan to work together on different levels on future supercalculators including multi-core processing and interconnection systems. In the next few years, they should develop an entire line of servers and intensive calculation technology.
Several reasons were given to explain this announcement. It’s notably been heard that Intel’s new partner didn’t appreciate the latest delays of the Opteron Barcelona which had a significant impact on its financial results. Otherwise, the Santa Clara giant’s long term vision, the Larrabee project as well as its rather flexible GPGPU (general purpose GPU) approach is attractive because traditional GPUs, even if they prove to be extremely powerful for certain types of calculation, still suffer from certain technical limitations.
