AMD back on slowly back on track

AMD has published its financial results for the first quarter of 2008. The below figures are in millions of dollars.

Losses are still as significant, but they have decreased while revenue increased compared to the same period last year. The sequential reduction in income is entirely normal and Intel had one as well even if it was less (-10%). Gross profits were 42% or a little bit behind the last quarter of 2007 (44%). Note that nothing was mentioned on the average sales prices of CPUs and GPUs. Moreover, AMD was happy to say that income from its graphic division was $230 million or an increase of 17% over 1 year.

The biggest events of the quarter were the arrival of the B3 core Barcelona, which was notably translated into large volume shipments of quad core Opterons to clients such as Dell and HP as well as the release of the Phenom X4 9x50. There was also the introduction of the Phenom X3 8000 and X4 9100e, 780G Radeon HD 3870 X2, and of course we can’t forget Hybrid CrossFire and CrossFire X.

At the press conference which followed the announcement of results, the company said that it was well on its way to start engraving in 45nm with good yields starting this summer and that shipments in large volume of CPUs with this fabrication process are planned for the fourth quarter. Finally, the first samples of the Bulldozer engraved in 45nm should be produced in 2009.
