Hitachi has announced availability in this quarter for the Ultrastar 15K450, a 15000 rpm drive with a capacity of 450 GB and in 3"1/2 format. It has 4 platters, 16 MB of cache and for interfaces, they have planned versions that use Serial Attached SCSI or Fibre Channel.
The only potential dampener on our enthusiasm could be the Seagate Cheetah 15K.6 announced at the CeBIT which does everything as well and has a sustained transfer speed as high as 164 MB /s versus 160 MB /s for this Hitachi. In both cases, the error rate is announced as 1 in 1016.
