     FireWire S1600: almost here

Symware has announced having made the first PHY (Physical Layer interface) IEEE 1394b S1600 chip. Set at 2 GHz, it enables attaining 1.6 Gbit /s. This is twice as fast as the FireWire 800 without adding any additional costs and almost four times the speed of USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/s). In practice, it’s probably even better because based on its conception the speed of USB remains very theoretical. Otherwise, you may recall that FireWire S3200 should arrive soon. As for USB 3.0 and its 4.8 Gbit /s, it’s not expected before 2009 or even 2010.

The FirePHY-1600 chip should be sold for $3.50 to interested parties and samples are already available to some clients.
