Intel's next architecture to be introduced mid 2006 on desktop computers via the Conroe processor should integrate a game extension to the set of SSE instructions named SSE4. Like SSE3 instructions they would be particularly useful in the video processing domain.
We remind you that SSE3 instructions increase MPEG-2 encoding performances by 10% under TMPGEnc whether if it is for Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 processors. Of course to bring possible performance gains, programs will have to be coded and compiled to use SSE4 instructions.
From a more global point of view, the NetBurst architecture used in the Pentium 4 is very well adapted to video processing, more than the Pentium M that will be partly at the origin of the Conroe. In consequence, the SSE4 performance improvement will be more than welcomed.
