Western has decided to change its warranty policy to the following for discs manufactured after June 1 :
WD Raptor, Caviar RE : 5 years WD Scorpio, Caviar, Caviar SE et Caviar SE 16 : 3 years
Discs for company use are guaranteed 5 years, versus 3 years for those used in desktops & notebooks. This does not apply to «naked » discs and so for box versions, desktop & notebook discs are still guaranteed a single year.
So what’s new compared to the previous policy ? Before, the WD Caviars, the IDE 7200 Rpm equipped with 2 MB of cache, were guaranteed just one year. There’s no change for most products and we find it unfortunate that no other manufacturer has followed Seagate, which offers a 5 year guarantee for all of its internal discs.
