Several frequencies for the 7800 GTX ? Posted on 06/07/2005 at 15:58 by Marc
Following an update of Riva Tuner to support the 7800 GTX, some user have noticed the CPU frequency increase from 430 MHz to 468 MHz in 3D.
Guru3D asked the question to NVIDIA and this is the answer: the 7800 GTX is initially clocked at 430 MHz, but NVIDIA has increased the chip’s complexity on the frequency level. NVIDIA is currently working with Riva Tuner for the software to read the good register and report the right frequency.
Does this means that the GeForce 7800 GTX works with several frequencies? It is probable that it does. Also a few days ago we could read on one of NVIDIA’s partners product page:
This page has strangely been modified. If this information is true, it would mean that several different frequencies are used for geometry rendering (triangle setup & vertex pipes) and for the other parts of the GPU. So, gains measured with the vertex shaders during our test wouldn’t come from an increase of the unit efficiency but because of a higher frequency.
Of course, the final result is the most important, but we still wonder why NVIDIA hasn’t officially communicated on the subject.
