An unusual motherboard is about to be release in Japan. The SuperMicro P8SAA+ is a motherboard based on the i925XE chipset and equipped with two PCI Express x16 slots. The first slot is branched in x16 (4 GB/s) and the second one in x4 (1 GB/s). As all PCI Express chipset lanes are used, the motherboard doesn’t have any additional PCI Express slots.
SuperMicro was already the first to release an NVIDIA’s SLI compatible motherboard. It was a bi-Xeon motherboard based on the chipset E7525 and equipped with two PCI-E x16 slots branched in x16 and x4. Performances of this type of platform should be lower than the nForce 4. Now we will have to wait and see if the P8SAA+ does provide lower performances. The P8SAA+ will be released mid December in Japan. The price: 35000 Yens so approximately $342.
