Samsung, Marvell and the SATA 3 Gb/s Posted on 21/10/2004 at 14:15 by Marc
Samsung and Marvell have just announced their partnership for the development of new hard drives using the Marvell 88i6525 chip. This serial ATA II is compatible with the SATA Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and has a 300 MB/s transfer rate instead of 150 MB/s for the first Serial ATA version. The nForce4 released yesterday is the first chipset able to reach this transfer rate.
We don’t know yet the release date of these hard drives, but it is important to know that such a transfer rate won’t be really useful. It will be used for cache data only if the memory chip is compatible with this speed. All these elements are required. The highest transfer rate so far for sequential writing/reading has been reached by the Raptor WD740GD. This test was made one year ago and we couldn’t reach over 70 MB/s. So even in RAID we aren’t able to reach the 150 MB/s of the first Serial ATA version!
