AFDS: Is OpenCL gaining ground? Posted on 14/06/2011 at 08:17 by Damien
According to the results of a study that AMD presented to us, OpenCL is gaining ground, notably in comparison to C for CUDA, the similar but proprietary API used by NVIDIA since 2007. More recent and more open, OpenCL has been designed to support all types of processor, whether CPU or GPU, which allows developers to ensure support, though sometimes with low performance, across a maximum of systems.
The survey that was presented to more than 500 developers in North America and the EMEA, showed a preference for OpenCL over CUDA. OpenMP on the one hand and Intel tools on the other are still however on top. It remains of course to be seen when this ground gained with developers will bear fruit in practice for end-users…
