After announcing its first 3 TB general consumer hard drive, the Deskstar 7K3000, Hitachi has launched the enterprise version of the same product, the Ultrastar 7K3000. Broadly, the spec is the same (7200 rpm, 64 MB of cache) and Hitachi has announced an average access time of 8.2 ms for sustained speeds of 152 MB/s.
While the Deskstar was released in 1.5, 2 and 3 TB versions, only the 2 and 3 TB versions are available here, with the 3 TB model using 5 platters.

Of course, as an entreprise product, the Ultrastar 7K3000 is available in Serial ATA 6 Gb/s and SAS 6 Gb/s versions, with or without data encryption and has been announced with an MTBF of 2 million hours. 600,000 read head load/unload cycles are given, which is the same as for the Deskstar 3 TB but double the lower capacity versions. The error rate is ten times lower, going from 1 in 10 to the power of 14 to 1 in 10 to the power of 15. The guarantee on these Ultrastar models is for 5 years, against 3 for the Deskstars.
