Although AMD is still a prvileged partner of GlobalFoundaries, GlobalFoundaries must continue to evolve in order to earn itself a place on the market. And Global are moving forward fast! They have announced the integration of Chartered, which was bought indirectly in September. Although not as well known as UMC or TSMC, Chartered was an important player in the foundary sector. Doug Grose stays on as CEO of the new entity.

With the addition of Chartered, GlobalFoundaries now has a total of 10,000 employees, 7 foundaries and a new FAB under construction in the state of New York. In 2009, the combined turnover of GlobalFoundaries and Chartered was around USD 2bn. With a little over 150 customers (including IBM, Qualcommm and STMicro) and not yet a year old, the new company looks set to challenge TSMC as top dog.
