TSMC has confirmed that it has new yield problems with its 40 nm engraving process. While in July yields of working chips reached 60%, rates have now dropped back to 40%. TSMC says that the problem should be resolved in the course of this quarter but the statement goes a long way to explaining the short supply of 40nm GPUs.
TSMC has had problems with its 40nm engraving process all year. In the second quarter, yield rates dropped to between 20 and 30%. This was the reason behind ATI’s problematic launch of the Radeon 4770.
