Product review: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GX2

Crysis

Of course we can’t forget Crysis and it was tested with its 1.2 patch (optimized for multi-GPU systems). We carried out the internal test in DirectX 9 High mode (forced via the addition of ‘’–dx9’’ behind the executable) and in DirectX 10 Very High.

The Radeon HD 3870 X2 finishes with the GeForce 8800 Ultra while the GeForce 9800 GX2 takes off and is largely ahead of this first card. With antialiasing, the Radeons once again post low scores. The GeForce 9800 GX2 also has low performances even if it finishes ahead of the 8800 Ultra. More specifically, we noticed a big drop in scores with the activation of this filter and a significant slowing down at times given that the card suffers from a lack of memory in these conditions.

With all details pushed to a maximum and in DirectX 10, the GeForce 9800 GX2 easily keeps its first place. On the other hand, its 512 MB per GPU are clearly insufficient once FSAA 4x is activated.
