The Samsung 245B: the 1st TN 24'' TN vs 24'' PVA, MVA...

Samsung SyncMaster 245B
It’s the event of the summer! There is now a 24 inch screen that can be found for under 500 Euros. At the time of writing this article, it is actually just above this mark, however, the price should shortly decrease.

In the end, there is nothing too unfamiliar here with a TN 5 ms panel and an announced contrast ratio of 1000:1 (forget the 3000:1 dynamic which the manufacturer claimed, because the measurement has nothing to do with actual use). This is exactly what we have found in the past few months on 22 inch displays, and as the following pages will show, performances are what we expected in terms of colors and reactivity. You may recall that results in these areas have been satisfactory even if competing PVA and MVA panels tend to be better. The same goes for viewing angles, although they are slightly smaller than those on 22 inch monitors equipped with the same technology.

As for ergonomics, here this screen is a bit better than most 22 inch monitors for a price that in the end isn’t that much more. We find two interfaces, VGA and DVI, with HDCP support for HD movies. We also appreciate the vertically adjustable base as well as the ability to rotate the screen for easy orientation (for example, to show the display to another user).
