Summing up the latest 5.1 speaker sets
by Philippe Ramelet
Published on February 2, 2005

Conclusion
There were a few things that stick in our mind after these speaker tests. First, the Logitech Z-5300/Z-5300E could have been an excellent choice with a very good power/price ration if there wasn’t this bass problem, which considerably reduced overall quality. Another thing that we found unfortuneate concerned the XPS 5.101 Black. It has the qualities to be an inexpensive but powerful and efficient speaker set, but its technical defect and weak basses don’t work to it’s advantage when it comes to watching DVDs or playing games. Currently available speakers don’t provide a real choice for someone who doesn’t want to spend too much money and still have a respectable amount of power.

More modest speaker sets also show that quality hasn’t been significantly improved in the last couple of years. The Altec Lansing VS3151R would be good, but the higher price isn’t justified compared to the Logitech X-530 or the Creative Inspire T5900, which has many qualities and wins the award in this domain. For high end products, however, the Logitech Z-5500 is a real success, and this speaker set will be perfect for your computer or living room thanks to its Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 decoder.
